Betway Latest To Join The Club of Registered Operators In Ontario

Fact Checked by Thomas Leary

There was big news on the Ontario sports betting scene this week as one of the larger operators, Betway, has successfully transitioned to the regulated market, according to the iGaming Ontario list of approved operators. Betway has been a grey market operator in Canada.

They had previously been registered by the AGCO, back in April. Operators who have successfully registered with the AGCO must also execute an Operator Agreement with iGaming Ontario before they can legally operate and take bets in the province.

iGaming Ontario was established in 2021 to conduct and manage internet gaming in the province when provided through private gaming operators.

How Can Betway Make Its Mark?

Customers of Betway in this province will no longer be able to place wagers at betway.com. They’ll have to confirm their location as Ontario, then they’ll be switched over to betway.ca.

Betway will have offerings across Ontario gambling sites, as well as sports, esports, and live casino offerings.

According to Morgan Stanley research (Sensor Tower data) from January 2021 through to the Ontario market launch on April 4, Betway topped out at 51% app downloads in Canada (in January and February 2021).

Betway is owned by Super Group Ltd., a holding company.

BetRegal Close Behind

The Betway news brings the number of live igaming websites in Ontario to 34. Others are expected soon, including BetRegal.

BetRegal currently is not licensed with the AGCO. The company has partnership deals with the CFL and the PGA of Canada.

“Admittedly, it’s been a longer process than we anticipated getting the final go-live on our Ontario license,” BetRegal head of marketing Aly Lalani said. “Of course we understand that this is a new process for the AGCO/IGO, and with any new process there are unforeseeable delays. We will continue to work hand in hand with the regulators, satisfying all of their requirements, as we continue towards our go live date.

“While it’s never fun to be late to the party, we understand that this is a marathon and not a sprint. From a product perspective, the months September through November are the most important of this year given the start of the NFL in September, NBA and NHL in October and the World Cup in November. It’s almost the perfect storm of popular betting events.”
