As the Mississauga native prepares for the final season of his seven-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, it’s worth wondering where center John Tavares will go once the upcoming NHL season ends. As part of our Ontario sports betting coverage, OntarioBets.com developed exclusive hypothetical odds projecting if Tavares will re-sign with the Leafs or if he will sign with a new team as a pending free agent.
Team | Odds | Percent Chance |
Stay with Toronto Maple Leafs | -250 | 71.4% |
Boston Bruins | +1050 | 8.7% |
Utah Mammoth | +1450 | 6.5% |
Pittsburgh Penguins | +1850 | 5.1% |
Calgary Flames | +2950 | 3.3 |
The Field | +1900 | 5.0% |

With Tavares’ current deal paying him $11.1 million per year (7 years, $77.7 million in total), it seems unlikely that Tavares will settle for a smaller deal, which is exactly what Toronto offered him according to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period.
According to Pagnotta, Toronto’s best offer to keep Tavares in town past 2025-26 was a three-year contract worth less than half of his current deal, though there’s plenty of time for the two sides to hammer out a deal between now and next summer.
That’s why we have the Leafs atop our hypothetical Tavares odds board, at -250, with free-spending teams like the Boston Bruins (+1050), Pittsburgh Penguins (+1850) and Calgary Flames (+2950) joined by small market NHL newcomer, the Utah Mammoth (+1450).
Whichever team does land Tavares, whether it be over the summer or once his current deal ends, is getting a player capable of lighting the lamp with ease, as the veteran of 1,184 NHL games has scored 494 goals to date, with 38 tallies in Toronto last year alone.
Whether Tavares’ run in Toronto extends beyond his current 515-game stint will be squared away in the coming days and months, though for now what we know for sure is that the market for the 34-year-old center will be far from weak when he is offered up, either as a trade target or as an unrestricted free agent next summer.
