Countries Most Represented By 2023 Emmy Nominations

By Jim Tomlin

The Primetime Emmy Awards are almost as old as television itself. So old, in fact, that this year’s ceremony will mark the diamond anniversary after 75 years of awarding TV excellence.

Of course, the Emmys are a centerpiece for the American television industry. But Canadians are no strangers to making a mark on the small screen in the States and this year’s ceremony, Sunday night from Los Angeles, will be no different.

OntarioBets.com took a TV timeout from Ontario sports betting coverage and used Emmys.com to gather every actor or actress that was nominated for a 2023 Emmy. For this research, only Emmy categories that have actor or actress nominations were included. We used the birthplace (or hometown if moved recently after birth) to find the countries that have produced the most 2023 Emmy nominees out of the 103 included.

Note: Some categories were awarded at Creative Emmy Awards on Nov. 7, but nominees are included.

There is no Emmy Awards betting at Ontario online casinos, but there’s still plenty of reason for folks in Canada to follow the proceedings. Americans dominate the proceedings but four of this year’s nominees hail from north of the border. Here is the list:

Martin Short: Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series

The veteran Short, 73, is nominated for the Hulu series “Only Murders In The Building,” in which he co-stars with Steve Martin and Selena Gomez. All three are also co-executive producers on the project. Short is a native of Hamilton, Ontario, and one of the most recognizable comic actors anywhere. He shot to fame in the 1980s by starring in “SCTV” on Canadian TV, then on “Saturday Night Live” on NBC. He has been a constant screen presence in movies and TV shows since.

Short is up against Bill Hader in “Barry,” Jason Segel in “Shrinking,” Jason Sudeikis in “Ted Lasso” and Jeremy Allen White in “The Bear.”

The other three Canadians nominated this year were in categories considered “Creative Arts” awards and the ceremony for those was last weekend. None of them won, but one category was notable for having two Canadian nominees.

Lamar Johnson: Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series

Johnson’s work on “The Last of Us” was deemed worthy of an Emmy nomination in the Creative Arts category. Johnson, a Toronto-born actor and dancer, was honored for his work in the episode “Endure and Survive” of the series, a post-apocalyptic drama on HBO. The series racked up four of the six nominations for Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series including the winner, Nick Offerman.

Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series

This was the category with two Canadian nominees – Luke Kirby for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” on Amazon and Oliver Platt for “The Bear” on Hulu.

Kirby, from Hamilton, starred as Lenny Bruce on the series, portraying the late, legendary American comedian after a string or roles on TV and in films for the past two decades. This was his third Emmy nod for his work on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and he won the award for Guest Actor In A Comedy Series in 2019. Platt, from Windsor, Ontario, has been working steadily on TV shows and movies since the late 1980s. Sam Richardson won the Emmy for his work on “Ted Lasso” on Apple Plus.
